Mission Moment at Waipuna Chapel
Missions Moment
Who are we?
One Love Skate is a dynamic evangelism and discipleship ministry that exists to be a positive presence in the skate community and beyond. Our goal is to journey with skaters, their families, and friends to resource and equip them to know and show the One Love of Jesus—the one and only love that truly saves and satisfies our souls.
Imagine pointing up and saying, “know the love.” Now imagine pointing to two people, making some awkward eye contact and saying, “show the love.” The arrow up is a one, and the arrow down is an “L” for ONE LOVE. This logo is a tool to create openness in conversation with others. Whether it's a sticker on a gas tank, or a conversation with a card in a car or an airplane, it’s a tool to share about what love really is—God’s love—the One Love of Jesus.
What do we do?
First off, we respond to what God is doing. An example of this was in 2010 when Joshua had a broken foot, and God showed him that One Love Skate is not about him skateboarding, but about God’s mighty hand to make a difference in our lives. As a dynamic evangelism and discipleship ministry, we ebb and flow with the needs presented in the current community and culture of the people around us. We have partnered with Maui County to put on skate events at different skateparks around Maui, but beyond skating, we’ve come alongside youth ministries to teach and help run youth events and camps, we’ve had 1L opportunities in over seven different countries through our 1L reps, and a fun thing we’ve done recently that many of you may remember is bringing pro-skater Tim Byrne down from Oregon to do demos and share his testimony here at Waipuna Chapel and at Kamehameha School and King Kekaulike High School.
Our current model includes a weekly Life Group at the Upcountry Skatepark, monthly give-aways, and pop-up partnerships with other skate ministries and youth organizations. We’ve put together a curriculum to teach through the values of the Christian life that we most see in the skate community: creativity, boldness, and persistence.
We’ve recently used this curriculum in partnership with AWANA Upcountry, where we taught through the 10 1L Core Values to the middle school group.
Why do we do it?
Both Josh and Nicole have been directly impacted by ministries to students outside the walls of the church building. We are compelled and called to provide that same opportunity to young people today and meet them where they’re already gathering. Be that at skateparks or schools, etc., we desire to live out the One Love of Jesus and bring others along with us.
1 John 4:9 says, “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.” That’s the “One Love” in the middle of this logo.
How can you get involved?
Pray with us through our prayer card. Come join us at the Upcountry Skatepark on Thursdays at 3:30pm for our 1L LG. Check out our website &/or SM platforms to connect.
Thank you for partnering with us with your prayers and finances. Let’s pray that many will know the One Love of Jesus that a lot of us have experienced first hand. And as we know this love, let us work shoulder to shoulder to illustrate, demonstrate, authenticate (aka show) the love. Thanks for your partnership knowing and showing the One Love of Jesus!
